BMW 8 Series Golden Thunder Edition

BMW 8 Series Golden Thunder Edition Revealed

A special “8 Series”

BMW has long sought to occupy a special place in the premium segment. The manufacturer of luxury cars from Bavaria aims at enriched models that can be raised to the level of collectors series. How is this done? The program is called “Individual” which means personalized models in the finest details with quality-crafted at the artisanal level.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

This minisegment is christened the Golden Thunder Edition and is represented in this presentation by a special 8 Series that will include all variants: Coupé, Gran Coupé, and Cabriolet. The BMW Individual program will create a special machine whatever the version (840i, 840d Drive, or M850i xDrive).

The 8 Series Golden Thunder Edition begins the lure with the included M package and stands out immediately in terms of aesthetic personalizations. The design department has created a special paint variant called Sapphire Black or Frozen Black, beautifully contrasted with “gold” details in the bumper area, mirror, discs, and a board in the bottom area along with the entire profile. The discs have an abundant size of 20′ under which the large discs of the self-ventilated brakes are “hidden”.

The “total black” look is also present inside, where the quality details include the Merino Individual leather clothing, distinctive from the text “Golden Thunder Edition” embroidered on the headrests of the front seats.

The audio system for these rare versions will be supplied by the famous English manufacturer Bowers&Wilkins and each model will be identified by an “emblem” embedded in the cabin.

The engines will all be turbo. The 840i xDrive version is based on the 6-cylinder unit, 3,000 cubic meters with 340 horsepower, the M850i xDrive version has the 8-cylinder unit 4,400 cubic meters with 530 horsepower while the Diesel 840d xDrive version uses the 6-cylinder in-line engine, 3,000 cubic horsepower that develops 320 power.

To be fair, in this exclusive version we would have ruled out the diesel engine as not worthy of the level, but perhaps in Bavaria, the market laws and requirements have been “respected”. The gearbox will be automatic for all versions, the shock absorbers will be electronically controlled to suit road conditions while the rear wheels are active and react to the steering wheel command.

Performance in this segment is a condition and not an option, but the 8 Series Golden Thunder guarantees a sprint of 0-100km/h of 4.9 seconds for the 840i version and 3.9 seconds for the 850i version.

“Music” differs significantly for the M8 Coupé and Cabrio versions which have M5 sports sedan engine units. The 4,400 cubic V8 engine develops 600 horsepower for the M8 and with the help of two turbines, this unit reaches the 625 horsepower quota for the M8 Competition version.

Speeds from 0-100 km/h at this time mark a runway time: only 3.3 seconds (3.2 for M8 Competition), Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h, but the “release” may be required. An optional payment to reach the quota of 305 km/h, but you certainly can’t use this speedometer outside of Germany.

Do Electric Cars Save You Money? Yes And No

There’s a lot to love about electric cars. From the smooth and quiet ride to the instant torque and acceleration. Then there is the fact that you are lowering your carbon footprint dramatically when you drive one. Especially if you live in a large metropolis, you can feel good about not adding to the air pollution around you.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″ tdc_css=””]

Looking at a Tesla Map you can see that there are charging stations just about everywhere so recharging is as convenient as getting gas is in a traditional car.

And if you aren’t filling the tank with gas then it makes sense that they save you money. Or do they? Sure, you save a lot on gas but can that offset some of the other costs? And gas is at historic lows right now so the savings are not as apparent as they were a few years ago.

Electric cars have pros and cons but you do need to look at it realistically to understand if it is worth it to own an EV.

In this article, we will go over some of the things to keep in mind when it comes to electric vehicles and money savings.

High initial cost

Though prices have been falling over the last few years, the cost of electric cars is still higher than the average traditional car in the same class. Almost across the board the EV models cost more.

Since they have no emissions, many governments are trying to encourage people to buy them by offering generous tax cuts. There was a federal tax cut of $7,500 and then whatever local incentives which definitely brings the cost down.

Do the tax breaks bring the price down to be competitive with a gas powered car? Unfortunately, the costs are still going to be higher.

Even leasing costs more even though it is cheaper to get behind the wheel when leasing as opposed to buying. And this is a good option if you want to make sure that the latest tech that emerges every year doesn’t leave you behind in an outdated car.

No paying for gas

Gas prices are at a low not seen in a couple of decades. Right now that means that there isn’t as big a savings on gas as there had been. Although, it is likely a temporary thing. Gas prices are highly dependent on a number of moving parts that are difficult to understand. Which means that we could see those spikes of a few dollars per gallon once again.

And when it does spike, there is almost always a surge in electric car sales along with it. Now, this is one case where electric cars are much cheaper. It doesn’t matter how much you are paying for electricity in your area and how low the gas prices are. Charging is much cheaper than paying for gas.

When gas prices go back up, then you will be even happier than ever that you have an electric car.

The one issue that ends up negating some of the savings on gas is that you have to buy a charging station for your home in almost every case. Unless of course you have a charging station at your work. This can cost a few thousand dollars so your gas savings won’t pay for the installation for a few years.

Maintenance

No oil changes, no filters to change and no wear and tear on engine parts means that maintaining your electric vehicle is very cheap.

Brakes are even more resistant to wear and tear as the engine slows itself down so you don’t need the brakes as much. Similar to how a manual transmission works.

There is one potential caveat to all of this, however. Most batteries are guaranteed for the first 100,000 miles of the car. After that, if a battery stops charging then you will be spending thousands to replace it. Now, this is not very likely to happen quickly after the 100,000 comes and goes, but it does also depend on the model of the car.

For instance, air cooled batteries don’t last as long as liquid cooled batteries. In any case, you should expect your batteries to last quite a while.

Another way that maintenance costs less, is that diagnostics can be done remotely. Your car likely has the computer linked to your dealer and will send reports to their server. When something looks amiss it will send an alert. If there is nothing reported as looking like it requires some maintenance, then you aren’t bringing your car in for routine checkups which save money and time.

Car Radiator Problem

5 Ways to Identify a Car Radiator Problem

Your car’s radiator has an essential job. It keeps the engine from overheating by pumping coolant through it. This coolant receives heat and moves it away from your engine block.

Your vehicle’s radiator has thin metal fins. It is these that are instrumental in transporting the engine’s heat into the air outside your car.

If your radiator isn’t working, then your car will overheat. That’s a costly fix, so you need to keep an eye on your radiator and cooling system.

Let’s explore some ways you can tell that your car radiator is having problems.

Green Liquid Under the Vehicle

Any time that your vehicle is leaking liquid, it’s never a good sign. You might notice this happening:

  • When you’ve parked the car in the driveway or garage
  • When you’re driving, and you look back to see a drip trail

Liquid color can help determine what the problem is. In the case of radiator issues, you’re looking for green liquid, since that’s probably coolant.

What you’ll need to do is ask a mechanic to perform a pressure test. This can determine the leak’s source.

If the leak’s not bad, you might be able to repair the broken part or get a patch. A hose is one obvious potential leak point.

If the issue is more serious, then the mechanic will tell you so, and you might need to replace the radiator completely. Getting a new, well-reviewed performance radiator is an option.

Rust Accumulating

Rust is your enemy as a car owner. Sometimes it’s hard to avoid, though, especially if you live in an area that gets lots of snow in the winter, and you don’t have a garage where you can store your car.

If this is your situation, it’s smart to get your car washed frequently in the winter, to get some of that accumulated salt off.

Rust can impact the radiator, too. Sometimes:

  • A piece of rust falls in the engine
  • It mixes with the coolant, producing a thick liquid
  • The engine can no longer cool itself as effectively

The only way you’ll be able to tell that this is happening is if the engine overheats. When you take the car to the shop, the mechanic can flush out the radiator. This will get rid of the contaminated coolant.

You have to get that sludge removed, or else you’ll get corrosion. At least flushing out the radiator does not cost as much as getting it replaced.

Thermostat Failure

There is a thermostat in your car, and it is not a radiator part. However, what’s happening with your thermostat might indicate what’s going on with your radiator.

A thermostat problem can lead directly to an engine overheating. You won’t have much trouble telling if that’s what it is going on. Your engine will overheat very rapidly.

If that happens, you might have to get the vehicle towed to the repair shop. You just have to hope that it didn’t happen when you’re out on the highway in rush hour or in an area far from a tow truck or a car repair shop.

Water Pump Failure

Your cooling system also features a water pump. If it fails, then it cannot pump the coolant through the engine. The temperature won’t get the proper regulation.

Since you won’t be getting the needed circulation, the vehicle will overheat. Water pump failure is one of the more common radiator problems that you can have. However, it is not an expensive fix.

Air in the Cooling System

You never want to trap air in the cooling system, but it happens. When it does, the coolant cannot flow, impeding the system’s basic functionality.

The coolant won’t do the job that it’s supposed to do with air present. Again, you’re going to have overheating, and that will be your warning sign.

A mechanic can remove the air bubbles from the cooling system. This is another fix that will cost you some money, but not as much as a radiator replacement.

As you look at these indicators that something has gone wrong with your car’s radiator, there is a commonality. In many cases, regardless of the particulars, the vehicle overheating is the reaction.

Whenever that happens, there is a better than average chance that the radiator is to blame in some way. If you don’t know much about cars, you’ll need to get to a mechanic who can tell you just what the issue is and how much it will cost to fix it.
