How to Add another type of vehicle to the Existing Driving License?

A driving license is an official document that permits you to drive one or more types of vehicle, such as motorcycles, cars, trucks, or buses in the country. In Japan, you also need a driving license to drive a moped motorcycle on a public road. When getting your license or adding another type of vehicle to the existing driving license, you’ll need to ensure you have a jdm license plate frame for your vehicle.  Before we get into adding different vehicles to the existing license, let’s understand the types of driving licenses in Japan.

Types of Driving Licenses in Japan

In Japan, driving licenses are classified by experience level and the type of vehicle you will be driving.

  • Provisional License: It is issued to new drivers who are undergoing driving training for a class 1 license. It requires users to display learners’ black and white license plates. Also, they cannot drive a vehicle alone. They need to have a class 1 license holder accompanying them when driving. It is also worth mentioning that this license will expire in six months, and within that, you’ll have to get a class 1 license.

  • Class 1 License: People who want to drive their personal cars on public roads must get a class 1 license.

  • Class 2 License: Those who want to drive a commercial or passenger-carrying vehicle, e.g., bus, taxi, or truck, must obtain a class 2 license. Also, the driver must be at least 21 years old and has a minimum of 3 years of experience driving under a class 1 license.

Let’s understand the different categories of vehicles:

  • Moped Motorcycle: A bike with an engine of 50cc or less is considered a moped vehicle.
  • Small Motorcycle: A bike with an engine of more than 50cc but less than 125cc is considered a small motorcycle.
  • Ordinary Motorcycle: A bike with an engine of more than 125cc but less than 400cc is considered an ordinary motorcycle.
  • Heavy Motorcycle: A bike with an engine of more than 400cc is considered a heavy motorcycle.
  • Small special vehicle: A specialized auto vehicle that has a maximum speed of 15 km/h and is smaller than 4.7m × 1.7m × 2.8m.
  • Heavy special vehicle: Big vehicles like tractors and cranes are considered heavy special vehicles.
  • Ordinary vehicle: Any vehicle that weighs less than 3,500 kg and can carry 10 or fewer people is considered an ordinary vehicle.
  • Semi-medium vehicle: Any vehicle that weighs between 3,500 kg and 7,500 kg and can carry a weight of 2,000 kg to 4,500 kg is considered a semi-medium vehicle.

Add Another Type of Vehicle to the Existing Driving License

In order to add a different type of vehicle to the existing driving license, you first need to determine if your existing license permits you to. For instance, if you have an ordinary vehicle license, you can only add the ones below it. In order to add a heavy vehicle to your license, you will need to contact the administration and might be required to give a test.  Also, don’t forget to update your license plate to reflect the type of vehicle you’re permitted to drive.
