The mentioned HDDs use the company’s first implementation of magnetic writing on the nine-disk platform, to enable more efficient data transfer to data center environments.

High-capacity hard drives have become the primary way of efficiently storing data across a diverse spectrum of applications. The new Western Digital 18TB and 20 TB Ultrastar HDDs allow users to implement up to 22% less slots and reduce TCOs by up to 11%. This also means reducing power consumption, reducing cooling costs, and reducing data center infrastructure compared to today’s 14TB CMR HDDs.

Western Digital has begun delivering specimens of 20TB Ultrastar DC HC650 SMR and 18TB DC HC550 CMR HDDs, with mass delivery expected in the first half of 2020.
