Huawei Mate 40 Pro revealed: 50MP camera and 90Hz screen

A sleek design, excellent screen, and a capable camera but do they fill the biggest problem of this phone?

You could say that Huawei is towards the end, but their latest smartphone says a totally different thing. Bigger screen, better resolution, faster charging, and of course an unrivaled camera from anyone on the market.

The Mate 40 Pro is Huawei’s latest super phone, which the company hopes to compete with the iPhone 12 Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy S20 and Note series. A phone with an attractive body, packed with the latest high technology and 5G. But while there are strong specifications on paper, it suffers from a major problem.

The Camera

The main sensor has been increased from 40MP to 50MP. It manages to shoot in 4K at 60 fps but also slow-motion clips at 1080p at 480 fps and 3,840 fps at 720p. YES, you read it well, as many frames per second as you can film even one bullet coming out of the pistol. The Cine camera has a 20MP sensor and an ultra-wide-angle and is the first camera on a smartphone to remove distortion features. The 125mm periscope returns to the other 12MP sensor and this time reaches up to 5x zoom unlike the 3x of the predecessor.

Unlike the standard version, the Pro reaches up to 10x optical zoom, for results we have to wait for testing.

The Screen

The 6.73″ OLED display is pretty much a jump from the 6.53″ of the Mate P30. The resolution has also been increased to 1,344 x 2,772px. And apparently, Huawei has decided to still be among the Android with side curved screen, even pretty curved, 88° arc. Do not be afraid, the physical buttons are still present. The refresh rate does not go more than 90Hz while the boxes are stereo and equipped with 3D sound.

The Battery

The battery has also received special treatment. The capacity remains 4,400mAh but the speed at which it is charged is quite higher. With a USB-C cable, it can reach up to 66W of charge. With wireless it reaches up to 50W, surprising!

The power chip is the Kirin 9000 and joins Apple in the 5nm architecture. Undoubtedly the 5G modem is present in both mmWave and sub6 infrastructures. The Huawei Mate 40 Pro will come to Europe with only an 8GB/256GB configuration with a memory card space. The bold $1,200 price tag will bring a range of colors.

Pro+ uses ceramic materials and reaches up to 12GB RAM. Huawei is here and does not intend to leave, this is definitely confirmed by the Porsche version present this time as well.

Huawei Mate 40 series prices

  • Huawei Mate 40: 899 euros
  • Huawei Mate 40 Pro: 1,199 euros
  • Huawei Mate 40 Pro Plus: 1,399 euros
  • Porsche Design Mate 40 RS: 2,295 euros
  • Huawei FreeBuds Studio: 299 euros.

But is it worth it?

Due to the ongoing restrictions imposed by the US government, Huawei phones can not use any Google services, including Gmail, Maps and Chrome and, most importantly, the Google Play Store. While Huawei has its own app store (for which I will come later) it is nowhere to rival Google and makes this phone difficult to recommend to any of its rivals.

Huawei P40 Series

Huawei P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ Officially Revealed

They don’t have Gmail, Google Maps or Google Play Store

Huawei unveiled new flagship phones: P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+. The gorgeous phones in view come with impressive hardware. But it only takes a few minutes to realize that something is wrong with these phones. They have no Gmail, no Google Maps or Google Play Store.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

Last year, the US government banned US firms from selling technology or doing business with Huawei. Although the Chinese company can only sell phones without Google apps, Huawei has decided not to stay down by introducing they latest flagship phones at normal rate.

Perhaps one day it will be able to restore Google services to its phones. It currently uses an “open-source” version of Android but without the features that link it to Google services. The company has started launching its own app store as an answer of Google Play Store. In China Google services are blocked but outside of China buying a P40 would be foolish. A phone running Google Android or iOS is worthless.

The Screens

The standard P40 comes with a 6.1-inch screen that flows over the sides of the phone like a waterfall. The screen design is inspired by the surface tension of water and helps the phone distance itself from the multitude of smartphones with the same screens.

The P40 Pro and P40 Pro Plus have the same 6.58-inch 2640 × 1200 display with the same design as the standard model. The edges are small where the P40 measures only 2.65mm at the top and 1.71mm at the sides.

All three phones have a fingerprint scanner under the screen that is 30% larger and 30% faster. If you’re looking for a biometric, P40 connection it offers it thanks to a dual front camera system and an infrared sensor that works even in low light. The P40 knows your face with or without glasses, and biometric technology is super fast.

The Cameras

Cameras have always been a strong point of the P40 series. The three models have a 50-megapixel main sensor and the company has tried to find the balance between the size of the pixels and the sensor.

On the P40 standard, this camera is accompanied by a 16-megapixel ultra-wide and an 8-megapixel 3x optical zoom telephoto. The P40 Pro has a 40-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a 12-megapixel 5x telephoto and a Time-of-Flight sensor. The P40 Pro Plus goes farther because the 8-megapixel telephoto sensor has 10x optical zoom thanks to periscope architectures.

Such magnification requires stability, and Huawei has used artificial intelligence to this end. Speaking of video, all three phones can capture ISO with 51200, ultra-slowmotion, HDR and 4K timelapse. At the front there is a dual 32-megapixel selfie camera setup.

Performance and Price

The P40 family comes with a Kirin 990 processor and a 5G chip. The phone screen is 90Hz but can be lowered to 60Hz to save battery life.

The phone goes on sale in some configurations from April 7 with the base model P40 for €799 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of memory. The P40 Pro starts at €999 for 8GB of RAM and 256GB of memory. While the P40 Pro+ runs at €1,399 for 8GB of RAM and 512GB of memory. The latter goes on sale in June.

Huawei P40 Lite

Huawei Revealed the P40 Lite in Silence and Secrecy

Affordable powerhouse without Google

Huawei will unveil its new P40 series in Paris on March 26. However, Huawei is already bringing P40 Lite to Europe – in silence and secrecy.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

As one campaign indicates, the Huawei P40 Lite will soon be available in Spain – even before the current P40 will be introduced. The price of the P40 Lite in Spain is said to be around 300 euros. An exact price has not been announced yet.

What is striking about the Huawei P40 Lite is the adjustment of the cameras on the back. Similar to the current iPhone, the Google Pixel 4 series, and the Samsung Galaxy S20, Huawei has placed all four camera lenses on a rectangular surface. The camera setup consists of a 48 MP main camera, an ultra wide angle lens, a 2 MP macro lens and a 2 MP sensor.

P40 Lite

What are the specs for that price?

The P40 Lite is powered by a Kirin 810 mid-range processor. This is supported by 8 GB of RAM. The internal memory is 128 GB and can be expanded up to 256 GB using a nano memory card.

Huawei uses IPC LCD screen technology. The screen has a diagonal of 6.4 inches, the resolution is 1,080×2,310 pixels. The P40 Lite battery has a capacity of 4200 mAh. It can be charged with a power up to 40 watts.

Huawei P40 Lite availability

Huawei P40 Lite will be available through the Huawei e-store starting form March 2. It will be available in three colors: Crush Green, Sakura Pink, and Midnight Black. As we have mention above, the device it said to be priced at around 300 euros. If you pre-order the smartphone you will get free pair of Huawei FreeBuds 3.

MatePad Pro 5G Tablet

Huawei Unveiled MatePad Pro 5G Tablet with 5G and Wireless Charging

The MatePad Pro 5G even has an optional stylus and keyboard cover

Huawei’s newest tablet, the MatePad Pro 5G, is a 5G version of the 10.8-inch tablet introduced last year for the Chinese market. Combined with the M-Pencil stylus keyboard and pen, the tablet can be compared to the iPad Pro though it has some unique features.

[td_block_ad_box spot_id=”custom_ad_2″]

One of them is two-way wiring charging, the ability to connect the smartphone screen to the tablet, and 5G connectivity. The tablet comes with Android open-source and without Google apps and services. Huawei says the MatePad Pro is the world’s first wireless technology tablet.

Tablet charging is done with 27W and reverse charging with 7.5W via wireless technology. This tablet can also be used to charge the keyboard case, headset or smartphone. But it can only charge one device at a time. Compared to the iPad Pro, the screen frames on the MatePad Pro 5G are much thinner and Huawei says the screen covers 90% of the tablet’s body.

The screen has a resolution of 2,560 × 1600 with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Inside is a Kirin 990 processor and 7,250 mAh battery. Like the iPad Pro, the MatePad Pro can charge the stylus pen by attaching on it. With just 30 seconds of charging we get 10 minutes of battery life.

The 5G tablet goes for €799 for the base model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of memory. The most expensive goes for €949 for 8GB of RAM and 512GB of memory.
